iTunes has revolutionized the way we store and listen to music. Since its initial release, it’s dominated the online music industry and it’s rare to find a computer that doesn’t have the program installed. However, iTunes is such an expansive program that it can be confusing to use, so today we’re going to tackle some common questions about iTunes and show you how to easily transfer music between iTunes and different computers.
Where is the location of iTunes music?
All of the media in your iTunes library is stored in a database, which is called the iTunes library file. The actual files themselves are kept in your iTunes Media Folder, which is where you’ll need to go if you physically want to delete files or copy them to another folder.
The location of your iTunes library varies, depending in your operating system.
If you’re using Windows 7 or 8, you can find the library if you go to C:\Users\(yourusername)\My Music\iTunes\
If you’re using Windows Vista, you’ll find it under C:\Users\(yourusername)\Music\iTunes\
If you’re using a Mac, you’ll need to open up the Finder, then select Go -> Home -> Music -> iTunes.
How to add music from your computer to iTunes
Although the iTunes Media Folder contains all the songs that are currently in your iTunes library, you may find that you have music in other folders on your computer that you want to listen to via iTunes. So, if you want to add music to your iTunes library that’s already on your computer, you’ll need to follow these steps:
If you’re using Windows:
Step 1: Open iTunes and wait for it to load up
Step 2: Select the ‘File’ option at the top of the screen and select either ‘Add File to Library’ or ‘Add Folder to Library’, depending on what you want to add
Step 3: Choose the file or folder you want to add to your iTunes library. iTunes will then copy the file(s) into your library and you’ll be able to listen to the tracks at your leisure.
If you’re using a Mac:
Step 1: Open iTunes and wait for it to load up
Step 2: Select the ‘File’ option from the top of the window and choose ‘Add to Library’.
Step 3: Select the files you want to copy to your iTunes library, let iTunes do its thing and the songs will appear in your iTunes window shortly.
Note: If you want iTunes to copy the files that you add into your iTunes Music Folder you’ll need to ensure the ‘copy files to the iTunes Music Folder when adding to library’ setting is switched on. If you need to check this you’ll find the option in the ‘Advanced’ tab in ‘iTunes Preferences’.
